Penelitian yang berjudul Cinderella’s Character Deconstructed by Gregory Maguire in the confession of an Ugly Stepsister bertujuan untuk menjelaskan perubahan karakter – karakter yang ada dalam cerita pendek Cinderella yang di dekonstruksi kedalam sebuah cerita novel berjudul Confession of an Ugly Stepsister. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori dekonstruksi milik Derrida, yang dalam penelitian ini difokuskan pada tokoh dan karakter tokoh- tokoh dalam novel, skripsi ini menggunakan sebuah novel karangan Gregory Maguire sebagai objek utama dan cerita pendek Cinderella dari Disney sebagai objek pendukungnya. Metode kualitatif juga digunakan sebagai metode untuk mengolah data- data yang digunakan dalam penelitian. Data primer diambil dari kutipan cerita dalam novel, percakapan, penggambaran tokoh, maupun dari kutipan narrator. Setelah melalui proses analisis, ditemukan bahwa memang karakter yang ada dalam novel karya Maguire ini telah mengalami perubahan dalam karakter tokohnya sesuai dengan teori dekonstruksi. Dari penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa cerita disini mempunyai anggapan tentang sifat dan kepriadian sosok perempuan cantik dan buruk rupa. Pesan moral yang didapat dari novel ini adalah, novel ini mengajarkan bahwa sifat yang baik tidak bisa dilihat hanya dari fisiknya saja, meskipun mereka mempunyai paras yang jelek tidak berarti mereka juga mempunyai sifat yang buruk. This research entitled Cinderella’s Character Deconstructed by Gregory Maguire in the confession of an Ugly Stepsister is purposed to explain the changing characters of Cinderella short story deconstructed into a novel entitled Confession of an Ugly Stepsister. This research used deconstruction theory by Derrida to analyze the character and characterization from the novel. The main object of this research is a novel written by Gregory Maguire and a short story from Disney as the supporting object. Qualitative method is also used as data processing which is used in the research. Primary data is taken from some parts of the novel such as conversation, character description, and the narration of the story. After the analysis process, the researcher found that characters in the novel have some characters changes accordance with the deconstruction theory. From this analysis, it can be inferred that; this story has an opinion about good and bad behavior and the presentation of a beautiful and a ugly woman. The moral value from this novel is .the novel believes that a kind-hearted woman cannot just be seen by their physical appearance; even if they are ugly it does not mean that they have bad behavior.
