Kata kunci: idiom, jenis idiom, fungsi idiom, lirik lagu “What If” album Penelitian ini berjudul “An Analysis of Idioms in Song Lyrics ‘What If’ Album by Mr Big” yang bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis dan fungsi idiom yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu “What If” album oleh Mr Big. Dalam penelitian ini, teori dari Fernando dan Newmark digunakan untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Kemudian analisis tersebut dijabarkan menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Terdapat beberapa langkah dalam meneliti lirik lagu ini. Langkah pertama yaitu dengan membaca lirik lagu dengan tujuan untuk memahami konteks dan untuk mengumpulkan data. Yang kedua adalah mengidentifikasi dan mengelompokkan jenis dan fungsi idiom. Langkah terakhir ialah menarik kesimpulan dari temuan pada penelitian ini yaitu jenis dan fungsi dari idiom yang ditemukan dalam lirik lagu, dalam Album Mr Big “What If”. Berdasarkan analisis, terdapat 66 idiom ditemukan dalam lirik lagu yang digunakan sebagai keseluruhan data dalam penelitian ini. Ada empat jenis idiom menurut teori Fernando. Keempat jenis tersebut adalah transparent idiom, semi-transparent idiom, semi-opaque idiom dan opaque idiom. Peneliti menemukan 35 data dapat dikategorikan dalam transparent idiom, 8 data semi-transparent idiom, 20 data semi-opaque idiom, dan 3 data termasuk dalam opaque idiom. Transparent idiom adalah jenis idiom dengan jumlah tertinggi dalam tingkat kemunculannya Peneliti menggunakan teori Newmark untuk menemukan fungsi idiom dalam lirik lagu “What If” album oleh Mr Big. Peneliti menemukan bahwa 28 data mempunyai fungsi pragmatis dan 38 data mempunyai fungsi referensial. Berdasarkan temuan, fungsi pragmatis ditemukan dalam bentuk yang bervariasi. Disamping itu, fungsi referensial memiliki bentuk yang sama dengan jenis transparent yang dominan muncul yaitu dalam bentuk phrasal verb. Dari 38 idiom yang memiliki fungsi referensial, 23 diantaranya termasuk dalam bentuk phrasal verb. |

This research uses Fernando’s and Newmark’s theories to answer the questions of the research. Furthermore, the analysis was conducted using descriptive qualitative method. There are several steps in analyzing this song lyrics. First, the researcher read the song lyrics to understand the content. Second, the researcher identified and classified the types and functions of idiom. The last step, the researcher drew the conclusion of findings on the types and functions of idiom found in song lyrics of “What If” album by Mr Big. Based on the analysis, among 66 idioms found in song lyrics, there are four types of idiom according to Fernando’s theory. Those are transparent idiom, semi-transparent idiom, semi-opaque idiom and opaque idiom. The researcher finds 35 transparent idioms, 8 semi-transparent idioms, 20 semi-opaque idioms, and 3 included in opaque idioms. Transparent idiom is the most dominant type of idiom. The researcher uses Newmark’s theory to find out the function of idiom in song lyrics of “What If” album by Mr Big. The researcher finds that 28 data have pragmatic function and 38 data have referential function. Based on the findings, pragmatic function appeared in the various form. On the other hand, referential function dominantly found in the form of phrasal verb same as the transparent idiom form. From 38 idiom in the song lyrics which have referential function, 23 are included in the form of phrasal verb. |
