| Judul Artikel | JOE HILL’S PROTEST TOWARDS AMERICAN GOVERNMENT ABOUT LABOR POLICIES IN “THERE IS POWER IN A UNION” AND “THE TRAMP” |
| Abstrak | Tujuan dari penelitian adalah untuk mencari tahu bagaimana pengarang menggambarkan kehidupan sosial buruh Amerika pada Progressive Era sebagaimana dicerminkan dalam lagu-lagu yang berjudul “There is Power in a Union” dan “The Tramp” karya Joe Hill. Dalam penelitian ini, elemen puisi dan sosiologi sastra digunakan untuk menganalisis penggambaran kehidupan sosial buruh sebagai bentuk protes untuk pemerintah Amerika pada Progressive Era yang tercerminkan dalam lagu berjudul “There is Power in a Union” dan “The Tramp” karya Joe Hill, dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif. Selanjutnya data tersebut dianalisis melalui lima elemen puisi yaitu nada, suara, diksi, pencitraan (imagery) dan bahasa kiasan (figures of speech) untuk mengidentifikasi isi dari lagu tersebut. Kemudian dianalisis melalui sosiologi sastra untuk mengidentifikasi penggambaran kehidupan sosial buruh di Amerika pada Progressive Era dalam lagu tersebut. Analisis dalam penelitian ini dibagi menjadi tiga bagian. Bagian pertama adalah analisis lirik lagu yang mendiskusikan tentang isi, maksud dan tujuan penulis lagu melalui penggunaan nada, suara, pilihan kata dan bahasa kiasan. Bagian ke dua adalah analisis tentang kehidupan sosial yang membahas keadaan yang sebenarnya terjadi yang tercerminkan dalam lirik lagu tersebut, contohnya: jam kerja lebih dari delapan jam, sangat sedikitnya gaji buruh yang menyebabkan kemiskinan dan terlalu sedikitnya lapangan pekerjaan sebagai bentuk proses dari penulis lagu. Ketiga analisis tersebut menunjukan protes kepada pemerintahan Amerika tentang keadaan buruh pada Progressive Era. |
| Abstrak (Inggris) | The purpose of the research entitled “Joe Hill’s Protest towards American government about labor policies in his songs” is to find out how the song writer portrays labor’s social life in America at Progressive Era as reflected in songs entitled “There is Power in a Union” and “The Tramp” by Joe Hill. In this research, poetical elements, and sociology of literature are applied to analyze the portrayal of labor’s social life as a form of protest towards American government at Progressive Era as reflected in songs entitled “There is Power in a Union” and “The Tramp” by Joe Hill by using qualitative method. Furthermore the data are analyzed through the poetical, they are tone, sound, diction, imagery and figures of speech. Those are applied to identify the content of the songs. Then, it is analyzed through sociology of literature to identify the portrayal of labor’s social life in America at Progressive Era in those songs. The analysis of this research is divided into three parts. The first part is song lyric analysis through poetical elements that discuss about the content, the meaning and intention of the song writer in the song lyrics. The second part is analysis of social life that discuses about the reality that is reflected in the song lyrics, for example: work hour more than 8 hour, very low wage that cause poverty of labor and less number of job vacancy as protest of the song writer. Those three analysis show the protest towards American government about the labor’s life at Progressive Era. |
