Kata Kunci: teori sosiologi, perlawanan, kebudayaan Amerika modern, asimilasi Penelitian yang berjudul “Abel’s Resistance of American Modern Culture Assimilation as Depicted in House Made of Dawn Novel by N. Scott Momaday” ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui bentuk perlawanan Abel melawan asimilasi budaya Amerika modern dan alasan-alasan yang menyebabkan perlawanan Abel terhadap asimilasi budaya Amerika modern seperti yang digambarkan dalam novel House Made of Dawn karya N. Scott Momaday. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti fokus pada Abel sebagai karakter utama di dalam novel. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif untuk menganalisis data yang merupakan dialog dari novel House Made of Dawn karya N. Scott Momaday. Penelitian ini dianalisis menggunakan teori Sociological, Resistance, American Modern Culture, dan Assimilation. Ada beberapa langkah yang dilakukan oleh peneliti dalam menganalisis novel untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Menentukan objek penelitian adalah langkah pertama sebelum membaca novel. Peneliti mencari informasi tentang topik kemudian mengutip isi penting yang relevan dengan masalah penelitian. Setelah itu peneliti mengambil beberapa catatan dari sumber data untuk mendapatkan beberapa poin. Kemudian, langkah terakhir adalah mengatur, menganalisis, dan menjelaskan data. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Abel melakukan dua bentuk perlawanan yaitu publicly declared resistance and disguised resistance. Dalam publicly declared resistance, Abel menunjukkan perlawanan dalam bentuk pekerjaan dengan menolak untuk bekerja di perusahaan atau industri, penghinaan dengan tidak menjawab pertanyaan dari orang kulit putih, dan perbedaan kasta. Sedangkan dalam disguised resistance, Abel melakukan ancaman, kisah balas dendam, agama millennial, dan agama rakyat, mitos bandit dan pahlawan dalam kelas sosial. Alasan yang menyebabkan Abel melakukan perlawanan adalah diskriminasi ras, industrialisasi, perbedaan kepercayaan dan ritual. |

Keywords: sociological theory, resistance, American modern culture, assimilation The research entitled “Abel’s Resistance of American Modern Culture Assimilation as Depicted in House Made of Dawn Novel by N. Scott Momaday” is aimed to find out the forms of Abel’s resistance against American modern culture assimilation and the reasons that cause Abel’s resistance of American modern culture assimilation as depicted in House Made of Dawn novel by N. Scott Momaday. In this research, the researcher focuses on Abel as the main character in the novel. This research uses descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data which are the dialogues of House Made of Dawn novel by N. Scott Momaday. The primary data of this research are analyzed by sociological theory, resistance, American modern culture, and assimilation. There are some steps done by the researcher in analyzing the novel to answer the research questions. Determining the object of the research is the first step before reading novel. The researcher searched for information about the topic, then quoted the important contents that are relevant to the research problems. After that the researcher took some notes from the data source to get some points. Then, the last steps are arranging, analyzing, and describing the data. The result of this research showed that Abel did two forms of resistance, there were publicly declared resistance and disguised resistance. In publicly declared resistance, Abel showed the resistance of labor issue by refusing to work in industry or factory, humiliation issue by not answering questions from white man, and different caste. Whereas in disguised resistance, Abel did threats, tales of revenge, millennial religions, folk religion, myths of social banditry also class heroes. The reasons that cause Abel’s resistance were racial discrimination, industrialization, different beliefs and rituals. |
