Fokus umum dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam membaca. Fokus utamanya adalah tentang efektifitas penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pemahaman membaca. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui efek signifikan positif dari penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pemahaman membaca teks narasi siswa dan (2) untuk mengetahui persepsi siswa tentang penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pemahaman membaca. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kuantitatif yang bersifat kuasi-ekperimental. Peneliti menggunakan 2 kelas sebagai sampel yaitu kelas IX.3 sebagai grup eksperimen dan kelas IX.4 sebagai grup kontrol. Data diperoleh dari tes dan kuesioner. Data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan uji t untuk mengetahui efek signifikan musik latar cool jazz. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai ttest (to) adalah 3.12 dan nilai ttable (tt) dengan level signifikan α=0.05 adalah 2.01. Jadi, hasilnya adalah 3.12 > 2.01 atau nilai ttest (to) lebih besar dari nilai ttable (tt). Dapat disimpulkan bahwa efek dari penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pemahaman membaca ditemukan pada siswa kelas 9 SMP Telkom Purwokerto. Hal tersebut didukung oleh hasil kuesioner siswa dari grup eksperimental. Hasil kuesioner menunjukan bahwa 58% siswa memiliki gaya belajar audio, 88.5% siswa setuju bahwa musik bisa membuat mood mereka menjadi lebih baik, 77% siswa menyukai penggunaan musik latar instrumental, 53.9% siswa menyukai penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pembelajaran membaca, dan 73.1% siswa tidak memiliki masalah ketika pembelajaran membaca menggunakan musik latar cool jazz. Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah penggunaan musik latar cool jazz dalam pembelajaran membaca memberikan efek positif yang signifikan untuk siswa kelas 9 SMP Telkom Purwokerto terutama pada kelas IX.3. Peneliti menyarankan guru Bahasa Inggris yang ingin menggunakan musik dalam pembelajaran membaca untuk memilih musik yang disukai oleh siswa dan juga yang memiliki jenis dan tempo yang sesuai untuk proses pembelajaran. The general concern of this research is using cool jazz instrumental backsound in reading. The main concern is the effectiveness of cool jazz instrumental backsound in learning reading comprehension. The purposes of the research are: (1) to find out the significant positive effect of using cool jazz instrumental backsound in students’ reading comprehension on narrative text, and (2) To discover students’ perception about hearing cool jazz instrumental backsound in reading comprehension. The research was designed as quantitative research and it was quasi-experimental research study. The researcher used 2 classes as the sample: class IX.3 as the experimental group and class IX.4 as the control group. The researcher collected the data by using test and questionnaire. In analyzing the data, the researcher used t-test to know the significant effect of cool jazz instrumental backsound. The research result shows that the value of ttest (to) is 3.12 and the value of ttable (tt) in the significance level α= 0.05 is 2.01. Therefore, the result is 3.12>2.01. It means there was an effect of using cool jazz instrumental backsound on students’ reading comprehension in narrative text at the 9th grade students of SMP Telkom Purwokerto. It was supported with the questionnaire answered by the students in experimental group. Based on the questionnaire, it shows that in experimental group, there were 58% students with audio learning style, 88.5% students agree that music can make their mood better, 77% students enjoy the instrumental music from movie backsound, 53.9% students enjoy in learning reading cool jazz instrumental backsound, and 73.1% students did not have any problems using cool jazz instrumental backsound in learning reading comprehension. It can be concluded that using cool jazz instrumental backsound in learning reading has significant positive effect on the 9th grade students of SMP Telkom Purwokerto especially in IX.3. The researcher suggests English teachers who want to use music in teaching reading to select music that the students like to hear and also that has the appropriate genre and tempo for the learning process.
