| Abstrak | Objek penelitian ini adalah novel yang berjudul Hard Times karya Charles Dickens yang mengangkat cerita tentang keadaan masyarakat yang ada di kota fiktif bernama, Coketown. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa proses terbentuknya suatu budaya karena adanya superioritas ide dari satu golongan masyarakat terhadap masyarakat lainnya yang ada di novel dengan menggunakan teori hegemoni budaya dan menemukan efek-efeknya. Hasil dari analisis ini menunjukkan bahwa (1) Sekelompok masyarakat yang memiliki superioritas ideologi menerapkan pemikiran mereka kepada masyarakat lainnya melalui media-media yang bisa dimanfaatkan sehingga itu semua tidak akan terlihat seperti dominasi atau paksaan. (2) Efek penanaman ideologi akan bervariasi terhadap masing-masing individu yang ada di Coketown. Melalui interaksi sosial antara penduduk asli dengan pendatang, sebuah ideologi yang sudah ada bukan tidak mungkin untuk terganti. Penduduk Coketown yang hanya percaya fakta akan mulai berubah setelah mengenal ‘fancy’ dari para pendatang. |
| Abstrak (Inggris) | The object of this research is a novel that tells about a social condition in a fictional town named Coketown. It is aimed to analyse the process of cultural creation as a result of superior idea from a certain group of people to others in the society within the novel by using the theory of cultural hegemony and to find out its effects. This research is focused on the social issues of the society in the novel. The results of this analysis show that (1) the people who have superiority in the society use media in imposing their ideology and make it as a culture in there. Furthermore, this process is seen as cultural hegemony rather than a forced domination. (2) The effects of cultural hegemony are varied to every individu in the society and through social interraction between people in Coketown and the new comers, one ideology will not last forever. The ideology of facts in Coketown will be changed by the new one after people know about fancy. |
