Penguji: Tri Murniati, M. Hum. Program Studi Bahasa dan Sastra Inggris, Jurusan Ilmu Budaya, Fakultas Ilmu Sosial dan Ilmu Politik, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman, Purwokerto. Kata kunci: blue bird, drama, kebahagiaan, simbol. Penelitian ini berjudul “The Symbols of Life in Maurice Maeterlinck’s Play The Blue Bird”. Penelitian ini tentang perjalanan dua anak –Tyltyl dan Mytyl- yang mencari burung biru sebagai sumber kebahagiaan. Mereka ditemani oleh beberapa benda hidup yang berasal dari rumah mereka sendiri seperti cahaya,peri, anjing, kucing, api, air, gula, susu, dan roti. Berdasarkan latar belakang dari penelitian, tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan simbol-simbol kehidupan dan artinya dalam drama The Blue Bird agar para pembaca dapat memahaminya dengan mudah dan juga untuk menemukan pesan dari drama ini. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif untuk menganalisa datanya. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah drama karya Maurice Maeterlinck yang berjudul The Blue Bird yang dianalisa menggunakan teori semiologi dari Roland barthes. Setelah melakukan penelitian, peneliti menyimpulkan bahwa simbol-simbol dalam drama The Blue Bird menyimbolkan beberapa hal di sekitar manusia yang membantu mereka dalam menemukan kebahagiaan mereka. Hasilnya adalah simbol-simbol dan artinya serta pesan dari drama The Blue Bird. Simbol-simbol tersebut adalah burung biru yang menyimbolkan ilmu pengetahuan murni untuk menemukan kebahgiaan; cahaya yang menyimbolkan petunjuk yang membantu manusia untuk melihat apa yang tidak dapat mereka lihat; berlian yang menyimbolkan sebuah kecerdasan yang membantu manusia. Ada juga anjing dan kucing yang menemani kedua anak tersebut. Anjing menyimbolkan kesetian sedangkan kucing menyimbolkan penghianatan. Api yag menyimbolkan kekuatan dan air yang menyimbolkan kelembutan. Ada juga gula, susu, dan roti sebagai kebutuhan sehari-hari manusia. Hasil lainnya adalah pesan dari drama ini. Menurut peneliti, penulis drama The Blue Bird ingin menyampaikan kepada pembaca bahwa kebahagiaan itu ada di sekitar mereka, tetapi mereka tidak menyadarinya karena mereka kurang mensyukuri apa yang sudah mereka miliki, oleh karena itu, mereka harus lebih menyadari sekitar mereka dan juga bersyukur atas apa yag mereka miliki. |

Keywords: blue bird, happiness, play, symbols of life. This research is entitled “The Symbols of Life in Maurice Maeterlinck’s Play The Blue Bird”. It is about an adventure of two children –Tyltyl and Mytyl- looking for blue bird of happiness. Some live things accompany them from their house such as light, the fairy, the dog, the cat, fire, water, sugar, milk, and bread. Based on the background of the research, the aims of this research are to find out and to explain the symbols of life and their meanings in The Blue Bird play so that the reader understand the play easily and also to find the message of the play. This research uses qualitative method to analyze the data. The data source of this research is Maurice Maeterlinck’s play entitled The Blue Bird that is analyzed using theory of semiology by Roland Barthes. After conducting the research, the researcher concludes that the symbols of life in The Blue Bird play symbolize some matters in human’s surrounding that help them to find their happiness. The results are the symbols and their meanings and the message of The Blue Bird play. The symbols are blue bird that signifies a pure knowledge to find happiness; light signifies guidance that helps people to see what they cannot see; diamond signifies an intelligence that helps people. There are also dog and cat that accompany the children. Dog signifies faithfulness while cat signifies treason. Fire signifies the strength and water signifies the flabbiness. There are also sugar, milk, and bread as human’s daily need. The other result is the message of the play. According to the researcher, the author of The Blue Bird play wants to inform the reader that happiness is around them, but they do not recognize it because they are lacking of grateful for what they have, therefore, they should be more aware of their surrounding and be thankful of what they possessed. |
